Reward offered in hit-and-run that killed Prairie View man

A $2,000 reward is being offered to find the person responsible for the hit-and-run crash that killed a Prairie View man.

Lake County Crime Stoppers and the family of James A. Spicak, 68, each pledged $1,000 to the reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the Oct. 12 case, Lake County Sheriff's Det. Christopher Covelli said in a news release Friday.

Spicak, of the 16000 block of West Pope Boulevard, was found unresponsive in a ditch near the roadway on West Pope Boulevard about 11 p.m., Covelli said.

Spicak was pronounced dead a short time later after he was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center, Covelli said.

Police said Spicak was struck near his mailbox by a hit-and-run driver near North Eugene Avenue. Police believe the vehicle was heading west from the Horatio Gardens subdivision when the crash happened, Covelli said.

It's likely the vehicle suffered damage to the bumper, grille and hood area during the crash, Covelli said.

This crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff's Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit and Criminal Investigations Division, he said.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact the Lake County Sheriff's Office at (847) 549-5200, or Lake County Crime Stoppers at (847) 662-2222.
