Streamwood High School nurse gets statewide honor

Streamwood High School Nurse Mary Girardi will be named 2015 State School Nurse of the Year Saturday by the Illinois Association of School Nurses at the Oakbrook DoubleTree as part of the association's 58th annual conference, Elgin Area School District U-46 announced in a news release Friday.

Before becoming a certified school nurse, Girardi worked in various settings in the specialties of pediatrics and obstetrics. She has been a certified nurse for 16 years, working at Hillcrest, Creekside, Century Oaks, Horizon, Spring Trail and Elementary Schools as well as Tefft Middle School and several other elementary and middle schools in U-46.

"It was the best decision I ever made!" she said of her move to school nursing.

The association will also be giving Girardi an achievement award for helping the organization earn the necessary credentials to offer professional development and continuing education units, saving members time and money.

"Being the state's School Nurse of the Year motivates me to never stop exploring opportunities and education that will help me continue to grow as a nurse and within my specialty of school nursing," she said in the news release.
