Aurora man killed in crash on I-88

A 65-year-old Aurora man was killed in a two-car crash on I-88 Wednesday morning near North Aurora, authorities said.

Walter P. Smith was driving a 1991 Jeep west on I-88 in the center lane around 7:30 a.m., and a 24-year-old Naperville man driving a 2012 Toyota was next to him in the left lane, according to a news release from Illinois State Police District 15.

Smith attempted to change lanes and struck the rear passenger side of the Toyota, which caused his Jeep to overturn, the release said. He was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle, officials said. He was later pronounced dead at the scene by the Kane County Coroner's Office, according to the state police.

Illinois State Police did not release the name or condition of the 24-year-old Naperville man.

Each driver was alone in the car; the crash is under investigation.
