Lakes jolts top-seeded Marian Central Catholic

Zach Espinosa had a goal and an assist, and Lakes' boys soccer team stunned top-seeded Marian Central Catholic 3-0 in the Class 2A Lakes regional semifinals Tuesday.

Due to weather delays, the game took four hours to play.

No. 6 Lakes, which beat No. 8 Wauconda in its regional play-in last Friday, advances to Friday's 4 p.m. regional final against the winner of the game between No. 4 Grayslake Central and No. 5 Johnsburg.

Sean O'Brien and Foster Dore also scored for Lakes, which led Marian Central 1-0 at halftime. Nick Dydo also had an assist, while Wade Parmly and Dan Wieczorek shared the shutout with 6 saves each.

Grayslake Central, Johnsburg, ppd.: At Lakes, the Class 2A regional semifinal between No. 4 Grayslake Central and No. 5 Johnsburg was postponed due to lightning.

The game will be played at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Antioch 6, Woodstock North 0: At Harvard, Luke Semitka scored 2 goals, including a penalty kick, and added an assist, and the Sequoits opened the state tournament with a win over the No. 9 seed in the Class 2A Harvard regional.

Krystian Nikolov and Danny Brito each had a goal and an assist for No. 2 Antioch (14-6-2), which advances to Saturday's 3 p.m. regional final against No. 3 Harvard. Peter Boeh also scored for the Sequoits, while Mickey West had an assist. Alex Ruano had the shutout in goal.

Vernon Hills 4, Northside Prep 0: At Vernon Hills, the second-seeded Cougars won the lightning-delayed Class 2A regional semifinal.

The game was delayed two times during the first half before the Cougars and sixth-seeded Mustangs could complete the game. Vernon Hills (14-6) will play for the regional championship at 7 p.m. Friday against the winner of No. 5 CICS/Northtown vs. No. 3 Senn game, which was moved to Wednesday due to the delays.

Chris White scored his 11 and 12th goals of the season and added his fifth assist for Vernon Hills. Jose Sanchez (sixth) and Aaron Castellanos (fourth) also scored. Matt Hong and Corey Takaoka contributed assists.

Wheeling 1, Grayslake North 0: At Grayslake North, the fourth-seeded Wildcats ended the season of the 19th-seeded Knights.

Stevenson, Round Lake, ppd.: At Highland Park, the Class 3A regional semifinal between No. 7 Round Lake and No. 10 Stevenson was postponed due to inclement weather.

The game will be made up at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Highland Park.
