House to debate bill to provide $1.8B for lottery, roads

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Illinois lawmakers are considering a bill to provide $1.84 billion for lottery winners, local roads and 911 service during the state budget stalemate.

Democratic Rep. Martin Moylan of Des Plaines plans to present the measure during a committee hearing Tuesday.

He says the funds shouldn't be caught up in the budget fight because Illinois already is collecting the money from lottery ticket purchases, gas taxes and 911 surcharges.

But Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner's office says it's "another attempt by the Democratic majority to piecemeal together a budget that will force a tax hike on hardworking families without any meaningful reforms."

Rauner and majority Democrats are deadlocked over a budget for the July 1 fiscal year.

The Legislature is meeting for the first time in weeks.
