Nunda Garden hosting fall harvest celebration Oct. 22

Nunda Garden is hosting a fall harvest event from 4-6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, to celebrate a successful first year of growing fresh produce for donation to Northern Illinois Food Bank and local food pantries.

Anyone interested in learning more about the garden is invited to attend. Nunda Garden is located at the Nunda Township Supervisors office, 3510 Bay Road in Crystal Lake. Appetizers and desserts will be served at the event.

One in seven people in northern Illinois face hunger. Nunda Garden is a community garden project started earlier this year by volunteers with the goal of helping to relieve hunger by engaging, educating and empowering the community. All produce harvested from Nunda Garden is donated to Northern Illinois Food Bank, Crystal Lake Food Pantry and First United Methodist Church Community Meal Program.

In its first growing season, Nunda Garden harvested more than 900 pounds of produce. University of Illinois Extension Office Master Gardeners helped develop the planting strategy and train volunteers in planting, pest control and harvesting techniques. In total, volunteers have spent more than 500 hours tending to the garden.

Volunteer opportunities are available at Nunda Garden for individuals and groups. For more information, email NundaGarden@gmail.com or visit www.facebook.com/nundagarden.

Crystal Lake Food Pantry and First Community Methodist Church Community Meal are two of the more than 800 community food pantries and feeding programs in Northern Illinois Food Bank's network, which provides food to 71,000 hungry neighbors each week across 13 counties.
