Bail set for suspect in Elgin tow-truck driver shooting

A 21-year-old man was being held on $250,000 bail on charges shot a tow-truck driver in Elgin early Sunday morning.

Devonne L. Montgomery, of the 1100 block of Kane Street, South Elgin, faces a felony charge of aggravated battery with a firearm,

According to police, authorities were called at 1:53 a.m. Sunday for a 45-year-old man who was shot and taken to Presence St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin for injuries that do not appear life-threatening.

The victim told police he was on the 1200 block of Fleetwood Avenue trying to tow a vehicle when a man confronted him.

The two got in an argument and at some point the tow truck driver was shot and later driven to the hospital by an acquaintance, police said.

The department's Major Investigations Division investigated and the victim and witnesses provided a description of the suspect, later identified as Montgomery. Police also found the handgun at the scene, police said.

According to court records, Montgomery's only previous adult offense in Kane County was a traffic ticket in Elgin in spring 2015 for improper lane usage.

Montgomery must post $25,000 to be released from the Kane County jail while the case is pending. He is next due in court Oct. 30 and face up to 30 years in prison if convicted.
