Naperville man faces charges after falling asleep in fire station

A 26-year-old Naperville man faces trespassing charges after Naperville firefighters woke Saturday morning to find him passed out in one of their recliners.

Zachary Long, of the 500 block of Big Horn Road, is charged with criminal trespass to real property and criminal damage to property. He posted $150 of his $1,500 bail at the police department and was released Saturday.

Naperville Deputy Fire Chief Andrew Dina said he received a call from his overnight captain about 5 a.m. Saturday alerting him to the intruder.

"He told me they woke up to discover a male in his mid-20s sleeping in one of the recliners in the living quarters," Dina said. "They attempted to wake the guy up, but he was incoherent and vomiting on the floor, so they put him in an ambulance and took him to Edward (Hospital)."

Police said they waited at the hospital while Long was treated for possible alcohol poisoning and arrested him upon his release.

Dina said there were no signs of forced entry at the fire department's headquarters at 1380 Aurora Ave.

"He might have just stumbled around until he found an open door. We don't know," Dina said. "The police are investigating and the city's building department is inspecting all of our interior and exterior security doors to ensure they are functioning properly."

Dina said nothing else in the station appeared to have been damaged or tampered with.

"We're really fortunate nothing happened," he said.

Police confirmed they are investigating how Long wound up at the station and how he got in.

Long does not yet have a court date scheduled in DuPage County.
