Record-setting day at Norge ski tournament

Was it a great day for skiing? Depends on your definition of "great" and "skiing."

Either way, it was a record-setting day.

On a chillier-than-normal Sunday, Christian Friberg of the St. Paul Ski Club jumped a record 77 meters, breaking the previous record about a half meter.

The occasion was the 30th annual Norge Ski Club Autumn Ski Jump, held at Norge Ski Club, near Routes 14 and 22 in Fox River Grove.

Friberg made his record-breaking run from a 150-foot-tall tower with a ceramic track that's irrigated with water. That surface simulates ice quite well, allowing the ski club to host two events each year, regardless of the weather.

The club - the oldest, continuously open ski club in the country - has five hills, ranging from 5 to 70 meters tall.
