St. Charles fest features apples of 1700s, 1800s.

Here's a truly different type of antiquing.

Seven different types of "antique" apples were available for tasting on Sunday for the Heirloom Apple Fest at Durant House Museum in St. Charles.

Long-ago varieties of apples - from the 1700s and 1800s and not available in local supermarkets - were at the fest.

"It's a good way to taste apples that have a truly wonderful taste," said Susan Wukitsch, interpreter at Durante House Museum.

Hot cider and apple crisp also were available to sample.

At the same time, Pioneer Sholes School Historic Site in the LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve held its Civil War themed Fall Fun Day. It was interactive with toys and games and Civil War living historians, music and light refreshments.
