Rose will learn Bulls new offense from home

Derrick Rose is going to be home-schooled on the Bulls' new offense during the next few days.

After getting reexamined by the team doctor on Friday, a decision was made to let Rose continue to rest, according to coach Fred Hoiberg. Rose had surgery Wednesday to repair a fractured orbital bone below his left eye.

"We're going to actually get over there and watch some film with him today, because again, we've added new sets, new things," Hoiberg said Saturday at the Advocate Center. "So we'll get him caught up by a couple of coaches going over and seeing him at his house."

Rose was injured during the first practice of training camp last Tuesday, taking an inadvertent elbow during a scrimmage. He's expected to watch practice next Wednesday and resume basketball activity in two weeks, on Oct. 14.

"No, it doesn't change the two weeks," Hoiberg said. "Everything is the same on that. And then after those two weeks he should be able to resume full activity. It's just that these two weeks he'll be very inactive. They don't want him really doing much of anything except walking back and forth (at home), getting a lot of rest, and not doing anything where he could dilate his blood vessels."

Hoiberg praises Saunders:

There has been sad news out of Minnesota in recent days, reports that Timberwolves coach Flip Saunders is unlikely to coach this season due to Hodgkin's Lymphoma.

Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg played for Saunders back when the Timberwolves reached the Western Conference finals in 2004.

"Obviously, thinking a lot about Flip, thoughts and prayers to Flip and his family," Hoiberg said. "He's a great man. I was honored to play for him and just really talk basketball with him. He's had a big impact on my career. When my career was down and out here when I left Chicago, he gave me an opportunity and then just to be able to remain in touch with Flip, talk to him and bounce things off him ... so obviously (I'm) wishing him the best and hoping he's back out there on their floor where he belongs."

Bull horns:

Bulls chairman Jerry Reinsdorf watched Saturday's practice and spoke to many of the players when it was over. ... The Bulls will take Sunday off, then practice Monday at the United Center in preparation for the preseason opener against Milwaukee. Coach Fred Hoiberg said he has not settled on a starting lineup for Tuesday.
