Brother of Bears legend Brian Urlacher enters 26th District race

Mettawa Mayor Casey Urlacher is running for the 26th District Illinois Senate seat that will be vacant following state Sen. Dan Duffy's decision not to seek re-election in 2016.

Urlacher, the brother of Chicago Bears legend Brian Urlacher, was elected mayor of the village of around 550 people in 2013. He said he has been thinking about running for awhile now and decided to go ahead with his campaign after Duffy announced in early September he wouldn't run again.

"I feel like I could do some good in Springfield," Urlacher said Friday. "I look forward to going to Springfield every day working for the people of the 26th District."

Urlacher said if elected to the state Senate, he would continue on as Mettawa mayor, an unpaid position.

"If anything, it helps my village," Urlacher said. "We have done a lot of good and I don't want to step away from that." The 26th District includes a large portion of central and southwest Lake County, as well as parts of northwestern Cook County, northeastern Kane County, and southeastern McHenry County. The district includes parts of Libertyville, Lake Zurich, Cary, Algonquin and the Barrington area.

Urlacher said he will be hosting events in the 26th District to meet voters during the campaign.

Two other Republicans are seeking their party's nomination: Dan McConchie, from Hawthorn Woods, and Martin McLaughlin, the village president of Barrington Hills.

The Republican primary will take place March 15, 2016, in advance of the general election in November 2016.
