Restaurant with urban vibe to open Monday in Barrington
Shakou, a restaurant featuring Asian cuisine, is expanding and opening a third suburban location in downtown Barrington.
The restaurant is expected to open Monday at 121 W. Main St. The main floor at the new eatery features a dining room with a sushi bar and cocktail lounge with a bar. The upstairs features a rooftop terrace, a large dining and event area and a private bar.
Officials from the village say it features an urban feel.
“The village is excited to bring this restaurant concept to Barrington. We are the first suburban community to offer a second-floor outdoor patio dining area in a downtown setting,” said Peggy Blanchard, economic & community development director for Barrington.
The establishment, open for lunch and dinner, will employ about 50 people. Executive Chef Sang Choi will lead the kitchen and Owner Adam Garvanian along with partners Aleks and Chrissy Dupor and Ed Hartigan will oversee operations.
“We are excited to welcome the community to enjoy the inventive cuisine and unique ambience that is Shakou,” Garvanian said. “Shakou means 'social life' in Japanese and we created our new venue as a place for friends, family and business colleagues to meet, network, celebrate and dine.”
The eatery joins locations at 312 Main St. in downtown St. Charles and another in Libertyville that opened more than two years ago. Shakou Libertyville has been named one of the Top 100 “Hot Spot” Restaurants in America by Open Table for the past two years.
The dinner menu includes hot and cold appetizers, soups, salads, by-the-piece nigiri/sashimi and maki ($3-$7), signature maki rolls ($12- $22) and beef, chicken, fish, noodle and seafood cooked entrees ($17-$39). The lunch menu also features sushi bar specials ($9-$11), Bento Box lunch specials ($12-$14) and sandwiches ($10-$12).
Specialties include signature Maki such as Black Widow, with black rice, lightly battered fresh water eel, avocado topped with tempura crunch, sautéed scallops, tobiko and unagi sauce and Golden Lobster, featuring lobster tempura, avocado and masago, wrapped in soy paper topped with seared garlic egg yolk sauce, unagi sauce and wasabi mayo.
