Driver won't face charges in fatal Bartlett crash

A driver who struck and killed a 54-year-old pedestrian on Lake Street in Bartlett early Monday morning will not be cited or charged in connection with the crash, Bartlett police said Tuesday.

The Kane County Coroner's office identified the pedestrian as Usha Patel, 54, of Bartlett.

Patel was attempting to cross Lake Street about 5:30 a.m. Monday when an eastbound Chevrolet Cruze traveling in the inside lane of traffic struck her, according to police. Patel was taken to Presence Saint Joseph Hospital in Elgin, where she later was pronounced dead, authorities said.

An autopsy determined Patel died as a result of multiple injuries suffered in the crash. Toxicology samples also were collected and sent to a forensic lab, according to the coroner.

The woman driving the Chevrolet was not injured, authorities said.

Lake Street between Naperville Road and Lambert Lane was closed for more than five hours Monday while police investigated. The crash remains under investigation by Bartlett police, the Bartlett Fire Department and the Kane County Coroner.
