Injured bald eagle found along I-55 near Darien
An injured American bald eagle is being treated at Willowbrook Wildlife Center in Glen Ellyn after it was found Tuesday along Interstate 55 near Darien, officials said.
An Illinois Department of Transportation road crew spotted the bird Tuesday morning on the side of the road near Cass Avenue.
Willowbrook Wildlife officials believe the male eagle, which is 4 or 5 years old, might have been struck by a vehicle. The eagle suffered head trauma and abrasions and contusions to its wings; a cursory exam, however, showed no obvious broken bones and that the bird is, overall, in good condition, according to a DuPage County Forest Preserve District news release.
A more thorough exam will be done once the bird recuperates from the trauma, officials say.
The eagle was given medication and is being kept in isolation overnight.
The bird had a metal band on it from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, so officials believe it has had previous human contact.
