Kane County Audubon Society offers bird walks, trips

Join the Kane County Audubon for a bird walk at 8 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, at Nelson Lake/Dick Young Forest Preserve in Batavia. Meet in the parking lot by the silo, on Nelson Lake Road, three-quarter mile south of Main Street, Batavia. They hold a bird walk at Nelson Lake the first Saturday of every month throughout the year. Everyone is invited. If you're just starting to bird, learn from experienced birders. For details, call Terry Murray at (630) 896-3219.

On Saturday, Oct. 10, take a bird walk at 8 a.m. through the Dundee Township Open Space/Bird Sanctuary at Jelke Creek, on Boncosky Road, just off Route 31. Meet in parking lot on north side of Boncosky. For details, call leader Walter Lutz at (847) 468-1709.

The next monthly meeting will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14, at Hickory Knolls Discovery Center, in James O. Breen Community Park, Campton Hills and Peck roads in St. Charles. Environmentalist Gary Swick, an instructor at NIU and president of Friends of the Fox River, will speak on "Longmeadow Toll Bridge and Adverse Effects to Fox River and Forest Preserves." Also there will be a chimney swift towers update presented by Marion and Rich Miller. Learn about chimney swifts and the success of the Tower Project, conservation needs and a creative fun new game designed by the Millers. Join fellow birders for refreshments, raffle, recent bird sightings and good companionship. The building is at the far west end of the parking lot. On Saturday, Oct. 17, take a trip to Amboy Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary in Lee County, Ill. Meet at 7:30 a.m. at Hickory Knolls parking lot; note early start time. This forest preserve has oak savannas, sedge meadows and dry sand prairie, and hosts one of Illinois; highest populations of Blanding's turtles. For details, call Jon Duerr at (630) 584-5891.

On Saturday, Oct. 24, join a bird walk at 8 a.m. at Bliss Woods Forest Preserve, 5S660 Bliss Road, Sugar Grove. Turn east on Bliss Road for half-mile to the forest preserve's main entrance, on the left. Park at the end of the entrance road. For information, call Nancy Schnaitman at (630) 365-9595.

On Sunday, Nov. 1, take a bird walk at 8 a.m. at Oakhurst Forest Preserve, 1680 Fifth Ave., Aurora.

At 8 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, the first Saturday of the month event at Nelson Lake/Dick Young Forest Preserve in Batavia will be Scope Day. Spotting scopes will be set up for close look at waterfowl on the lake. An optional walk around the lake follows.
