Montini remains perfect on season

Montini remained unbeaten Friday night, picking up its fifth football win of the season with a sound defeat of Leo 41-0 in a Chicago Catholic League crossover game in Chicago.

Junior running back Prince Walker scored 3 touchdowns and gained 68 yards, and quarterback Justin Blake threw for two scores to lead the Broncos.

"Our defense is playing so well right now, this could be one of our best ever at Montini," said Broncos coach Chris Andriano. "They hit, they're fast and they're smart. Our defensive coaches do a great job of getting them ready. It's pretty exciting to see us play with that kind of speed and hitting football on defense."

On the Broncos' first offensive play, Walker ran 45 yards for a touchdown. Then Tommy Hyland intercepted a Justin Rogers pass at the 18-yard line. Hyland ran the ball in for a touchdown to give the Broncos a quick 14-0 lead.

"I saw the quarterback drop back deep," Hyland said. "I read screen right away and got lucky enough to pick the ball off, but I wouldn't have been able to make the play without my blockers. It was definitely a team effort."

Blake threw a strike to Tyler Millikan for 31 yards and a touchdown. Walker followed with touchdowns on a 42-yard punt return and a 2-yard run, and Brandon Shilgalis grabbed a 44-yard pass from Blake to give the Broncos a 41-0 lead at the half.

"The line gave me the protection to get the ball out on time and that's what we do," Blake said. "We practice hard all day and we go 100 percent to keep in game speed."

The Broncos' defense that held the Lions (1-4) to a net 11 yards of total offense for the game.

"We've been facing good teams, but we are never going to quit, that's not in our nature" said Lions coach Michael Holmes. "We have to execute better. Our defense has been playing good all year. It's a matter of not making mistakes against a good team."

Andriano took his starters out for the second half.

"Everyone got to play and when you get that, you keep the kids involved in practice. Everybody gets their chance get a little bit of game reps," Andriano said. "We like when we can do that."

Despite the big win, the Broncos (5-0) look forward to next week against St. Joseph.

"We have the same mentality for every game," Walker said.
