Big closures this weekend should make you think twice about driving downtown

Some major expressway hiccups will coincide with a busy Chicago weekend as Cubs fans converge on the city.

The Illinois Department of Transportation is installing steel beams on a new flyover bridge linking the Dan Ryan and Eisenhower expressways at the Jane Byrne Interchange Friday through Sunday.

That means some significant closures and drivers are advised to take public transit. If you are driving, here's what to watch for.

• The outbound Eisenhower Expressway (I-290) at the Byrne Interchange closes at 10 p.m. Friday although ramps to the Dan Ryan and Kennedy expressways will stay open. Detours will be posted. Lanes will reopen at 5 a.m. Monday.

• The inbound Kennedy Expressway will shrink to one lane between Ohio and Harrison streets starting at 8 p.m. Saturday through 10 a.m. Sunday. All lanes will close right before the Eisenhower interchange for 15-minute periods from 10 p.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Sunday.
