Palatine Girls Volleyball to Host Annual Volley for the Cure

Volley for the Cure returns to Palatine in October. The girls volleyball programs from Palatine High School and Fremd High School are teaming up to Paint the Gym Pink in the fight against Breast Cancer as one community. On Thursday, October 1, 2015 the two programs will be competing in the third annual Volley for the Cure match. The match will be dedicated to all the men and women who have been touched by Breast Cancer with hopes that this devastating disease will one day be cured.

This year's Volley for the Cure event will be hosted by the Pirates at Palatine High School, 1111 N. Rohlwing Road, Palatine, IL. At 5:00pm the Junior Varsity, Freshman A, and Freshman B teams will play, followed by the Varsity and Sophomore teams at 6:00pm.

According to Joyce Richardson, Assistant Girls Volleyball Coach at Palatine High School, "We know so many people who have been affected by this disease both near and far, we wanted to use October, the breast cancer awareness month, to hold such a large event. We are hoping that the Palatine Volleyball Community represented by Fremd and Palatine High Schools and their fans will rally to raise money to help find a cure."

This year's event holds special meaning in Palatine. Kari Janz, a member of the Fremd volleyball family, recently lost her battle with cancer. Janz and Richardson both played post college during their adult USAV careers and many of their friends and teammates are planning to attend the event. The community spirit will also be evident through the donation of two raffle baskets by Jo Gamroth, whose daughter Jackie Reimann played for Palatine. The Gamroth family was close with Janz and Jo Gamroth will be donating two special spirit themed baskets with handmade blankets representing Palatine and Fremd colors.

Admission to the event is $2; admission is free for students. A bake sale, 50/50 raffle, and prize raffle will also be held. Raffle prize donations already include gift certificates, several rounds of golf, spirit wear from both Palatine and Fremd, two iPods, an iPad, bags of 3M office supplies, a Bulls Jersey, handmade jewelry, a lottery tree, 4 tickets to see America's Got Talent at the Genesee Theater on October 10, and much more. All proceeds from this event will benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

All fans are encouraged to Paint the Gym Pink; shirts are being sold online through Waist Up in Palatine. Half of the shirt fee will be donated back to this year's Volley for the Cure fundraiser. Visit www.waistup.com/volley_for_the_cure to order an event shirt. Palatine will be wearing dark pink and Fremd will be wearing light pink on October 1. Both shirt colors are available for purchase online.
