Elk Grove's Fleming sets his sights on Southern Illinois

As an Elk Grove Grenadier and Schaumburg Seminole, Chuck Fleming has had plenty of success in baseball.

After he graduates next spring from Elk Grove, he will look for that success to continue at the next level.

The Grenadiers middle infielder has made a verbal comittment to play baseball at Southern Illinois University.

Last season, he was part of the Grenadiers' second straight Mid-Suburban League championship.

Elk Grove went 22-9 and Fleming hit .355 with 38 hits, 1 home run, 7 doubles, 2 triples, 17 runs and a team-high 25 RBI.

This past summer with the 18-and-under Seminoles he was named to the IBC World Series all-tournament team in Clearwater, Fla.

With the exposure gained through the Schaumburg Seminoles summer baseball program and Elk Grove High School baseball, Fleming considers himself lucky enough to be invited on college visits to four D-I schools during his sophomore and junior years.

The schools were all in the Ohio Valley or Missouri Valley Conferences and he received offers from each.

"I know I found the perfect fit at Southern Illinois University," said Fleming, who will pursue a degree in agricultural science. "From my first visit there, I felt extremely wanted on the baseball team as well as at the school itself."

He said Saluki coaches Ken Henderson, P.J. Finigan and Ryan Strain went above and beyond anything he could have imagined during the recruiting process.

"They welcomed me with open arms," Fleming said. "I couldn't be more excited with the opportunity that awaits me both athletically and academically."

Fleming is looking forward to his senior year as a Grenadier.

"Coach (Terry) Beyna teaches the game the right way," Fleming said. "He and coach (Don) Spaniak bring their excitement and love of the game to the field every day which rubs off on every player out there.

"I can't thank coach Russ Gangler of the Seminoles and coach Beyna and Spaniak enough for continually pushing me on and off the field to become the player and person I am today."

Norenberg off to England

Former Fremd standout soccer goalkeeper Allison Norenberg has been awarded a graduate assistantship to be the goalkeeping coach for Durham University in England.

She will be working toward a master's degree in world and public health policy. As part of the agreement, she will also play for Durham's top team (the university has three).

Norenberg was a three-year starter for the Vikings, compiling 33 shutouts. She was also a critical part of the team's run to a state runner-up finish in 2009.

Norenberg was an-conference, all- area, all region and all-state honorable mention.

Fremd girls soccer coach Steve Keller called Norenberg one of the best goalkeepers to come through the high school.

"Allison went on to have a stellar career at Miami University in Ohio and now embarks on a great opportunity in England," Keller said. "It is a tribute to Allison's talents and work ethic that she gets to continue her career and study abroad. Congrats to Allison on this great accomplishment."

Norenberg was a three-year starter for Miami, compiled a record of 39-17-6 while leading the Redhawks to their best season in 2012 with 20 wins, a mid-America Conference regular season and tournament title, and an NCAA tournament upset of 16th-ranked University of Tennessee on their home field in Knoxville.

Norenberg left Miami holding four team records with 23 career shutouts, 11 single-season shutouts, 39 career wins and 20 single-season wins. She was second all time in career saves with 207 and third in career goals-against-average (1.06).

"Allison was an absolute joy during her time here at Miami." said Miami coach Bobby Kramig. "She trained incredibly hard and yet was always fun, positive and a good teammate.

"In 33 years of coaching, I don't believe I've had a more dedicated player and one who made such dramatic improvement as Allison. Hers is truly a remarkable story."
