Boys golf: Jacobs garners Dundee-Crown Invite title

A very good 2015 season for the Jacobs boys golf team got a little better Saturday.

With a sizzling score of 290, the Golden Eagles grabbed top honors at the Charger Invitational hosted by Dundee-Crown at Randall Oaks in West Dundee, which is also Jacobs' home course.

The Golden Eagles, runner-up in the invitational a year ago, have finished first in all seven dual meets and invitationals they have participated in this season.

"We were firing on all cylinders today and we certainly hit our potential," said Jacobs coach Gary Conrad. "After we finished second last season we really wanted to win this invite on our home course. This team has the great ability to pick a teammate up that has had a bad day."

The Golden Eagles' Justin Lenzini, the individual runner-up in 2014, was the medalist with a 69. York's Jordan Less also carded a 69 but Lenzini won a scorecard playoff.

"I was a little disappointed in finishing second last season," said Lenzini. "I really struck the ball well off the tee."

Lenzini had plenty of help as Cooper Slack carded a 71 followed by Billy Walker (73) and Garret Tighe shot a 77.

Led by Less, York was second with a 296. Will Guest garnered an 18-hole score of 71, Mark Leali had a 76 and Tom Manning tallied an 80.

Cary-Grove, with a solid 306, placed third led by Zach Beaugureau with 73. Kyle Irlbacker had a 74 followed by Mitch Whitehouse with a 76 and Keaton May tallied an 83.

Geneva placed fourth with a score of 310. JT Kruzich was the lone Viking to land in the Top 10 with a 73. Also figuring in the scoring were Andrew Abel (78) and Tyler Isdenhart (78) along with Spencer Monroe (81).

Lyons Township was fifth with a score of 313 while last year's team champion Benet was sixth with a score of 317.

Alex Basseto led the Redwings with a score of 74, Nick Schanzer had a 78, Austin Feldman scored a 81 and Jack Neenan tallied a 84.

"We certainly didn't play our best," said Benet coach Marty Gaughan. "I don't know even if we had played our best we could have beat Jacobs. They had a great day."

Lake Park, led by a 79 from Jake Dinovsky, was seventh with a 318.

St. Edward and Fremd tied for eighth with scores of 326. The Green Wave was paced by Mike Mattas (74) and the Vikings' top golfer was Colin Robinson (79).
