Zopp: New PARCC test needs work

A day after Illinois released its first round of PARCC test scores, Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Andrea Zopp said the exam might need some work.

Zopp, a former Chicago Public Schools board member and Chicago Urban League CEO, said she supports the Common Core education standards that the new Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers are supposed to measure. But, the candidate added, the test might need to evolve.

"I think the PARCC test still needs work," she told the Daily Herald editorial board Thursday. "I think every educator I've talked to about the PARCC test says it needs work."

The results released this week show 70 percent of Illinois students didn't meet standards. Zopp said the test is intended to measure understanding of concepts and not rote memorization.

"It will get better," she said.

Zopp is vying for the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate to run against Republican Sen. Mark Kirk of Highland Park. Zopp and U.S. Rep. Tammy Duckworth have so far been the highest-profile candidates on the Democratic side.

National observers have said Illinois' race for Senate will be one of the most hotly contested in the country.
