Man dies after Aurora shooting

A Plainfield man died Sunday after being shot in the head a day earlier during an altercation at a party in Aurora, police said.

Family members have identified the victim as Derrick DiJon Page, 23, a former football player at Aurora University.

"He was a loving person - just an all-around good kid," said Page's uncle, Tom Gray. He added that Page was a talented athlete and an aspiring musician.

Aurora police said officers were called to the 600 block of North Lake Street on the city's near west side about 12:45 a.m. Saturday for a disturbance. Officers found Page lying unconscious and suffering from a gunshot wound to the head in the middle of Illinois Avenue at the intersection with Lake Street.

He was taken to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, where he died Sunday, Gray said.

Witnesses told investigators the disturbance originated at a party being thrown at a business on the 600 block of North Lake Street, according to police.

Some of the sponsors of the party may have been involved with an Aurora University fraternity, Aurora police Sgt. Jeff Wiencek said.

Family members said Page was attending the party with friends.

According to Page's Facebook page, he was a general warehouse associate at The Home Depot and a student at Joliet Junior College.

Before attending Aurora University in 2010, he graduated from Hinsdale High School, where he played two years of varsity football, according to his Aurora University football profile.

Police did not release any information about possible suspects. Wiencek said nobody is in custody, but the investigation is ongoing.

"We're pursuing all leads," Wiencek said. "We have reason to believe that there were a number of people present. We're asking anyone who knows anything to call us."

Wiencek said anyone with information about the party or the altercation should call Aurora police at (630) 256-5500 or Crime Stoppers at (630) 892-1000.
