Colorful kites dot the sky in Geneva

Kites of all shapes and brilliant colors peppered the sky above Peck Farm Park in Geneva Saturday.

The Geneva Park District and Chicago Kite hosted their annual kite festival where families could bring their own kites to fly or buy kites on-site. The first 500 kids received a free paper kite to color, assemble and fly.

Wendy Stanton and her son, Donavan, 7, assembled a purple cat kite with friend Kylie Davey. The trio from Batavia clapped and cheered as the kitty took flight and Donavan yelled, "I've never seen a flying cat!"

Alexander Sandrok, 2, of Geneva flew his two-piece T-Rex kite with the help of his mother, Sarah, at the controls and father, Al, helping it into the air. Sometimes it came crashing down and once it wrapped up little Alexander in streamers.

Also on hand were several members from Team Chicago Kite, who flew several giant kites to the amazement of everyone. Mike Holl of Willowbrook and David Zavell of Chicago launched an 18-foot-long parrot kite with a 16-foot wingspan, along with a red parafoil kite measuring 13-foot wide by 15-foot long along with a 100-foot tail. Other large kites included an orange clown fish, which had children exclaiming "Nemo!" when it filled with air.
