Palatine woman to head Reaching Across Illinois Library System

Mary Jo Matousek of Palatine was elected board president of the Reaching Across Illinois Library System during a recent meeting of the RAILS board. Matousek has served on the RAILS board since 2012, and is currently Media Center director at Meridian Middle School in Buffalo Grove. Additionally, Dave Barry, Bartlett Public Library District trustee, was elected vice president; Kerry Pearson, Arlington Heights Memorial Library trustee, was elected secretary; and Kathy Parker, Tinley Park Public Library trustee, was elected treasurer. RAILS provides delivery, shared online catalogs, e-book services, talking book services, continuing education programs, communication services, and other support to all types of libraries in northern and western Illinois.

• Anna Klipstein, a recent graduate of Buffalo Grove High School, received the Rotary Club of Buffalo Grove's 2015 Academic Scholarship Award of $1,000 at the club's meeting Aug. 13. The Rotary Club of Buffalo Grove awards a deserving high school student an academic scholarship each year for outstanding achievement and service. Klipstein had an overall GPA of 5.37; served as a tutor in the Literacy Lab; participated in tennis, track and badminton; and was a member of the National Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society.

• Arlington Heights native Kelly Bucher received the 2015 WESSCO International Scholarship from the International Flight Services Association Foundation. Bucher, a sophomore at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, is majoring in dietetics and Spanish. She plans to be a dietitian specializing in eating disorders. IFSA Foundation scholarships are reserved for those related to an individual within an IFSA member company. Bucher's mother, Mary, works for United Airlines.

• Samantha Bahena, an Iroquois Community School student, organized a food drive for the Des Plaines Self-Help Closet and Food Pantry as a community service project. Bahena created, printed and distributed fliers and - in two weeks - collected enough food and clothing to fill the back of an SUV.

• Schaumburg-based Technology & Manufacturing Association of Illinois Chairman Fernando Ortiz, Jr., Vice Chairman Jim Carr, and board member Patricia Miller were in a panel discussion recently on "How to Convert Smart Manufacturing Vision into Reality," held at the "Smart Manufacturing-Making It Real" symposium hosted at the Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation Institute in Chicago. Also on the panel were TMA members Jason Zenger of Zenger's Industrial Supply and Bill Fienup of Catalyze Chicago. Panelists discussed real world applications for Smart Manufacturing technology.
