After School Adventures begins at Des Plaines History Center

New this fall at the Des Plaines History Center, 781 Pearson St., is After School Adventures, which kicks off with "Mexico's Independence Day," from 3-5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15.

In honor of the Huichol and Tepehuan Indians of western Mexico, children will make an "Eye of God" or Ojo de Dios with wooden sticks and yarn. All After School Adventures programs are designed for children, ages 5-12, with an adult and run from 3-5 p.m. once a month on a Tuesday. The fee is $3 per child for nonmembers, $2 for members.

The second program, "Rosie the Riveter," is set for Oct. 6, and children will learn how American women stepped into factories during World War II to assemble airplanes and ships. To celebrate these inspiring women, participants will build a plane out of craft sticks.

On Nov. 3, children will create an art project inspired by the French artist Henri Matisse.
