South Elgin waterfall attracts local interest

A steady stream of people have been visiting a hidden waterfall in the Jon J. Duerr Forest Preserve near South Elgin after hearing about the unique local feature on the Facebook group page "What's Happening in Elgin?"

Juan Mancilla of Elgin was there to check it out after seeing the Facebook post.

"This is pretty cool," said Mancilla, who was making plans to bring a friend back to see it.

The elusive destination is off the beaten path, hidden on a grassy walk on the River Bend Bike Trail.

Park in the lot on Route 31 just east of McLean Boulevard and walk southwest until just before a small bridge. The waterfall will be on your right.

A local group of moms, who also saw the post on Facebook, traveled from West Dundee Thursday with their kids to explore the eight-foot high cascading waterfall on a hot day.
