Centegra continues program to fight childhood obesity

Centegra Health System will begin another session of the Centegra Kids in Motion program in September. This eight-week class is designed to help children and their families tackle unhealthy lifestyle habits through multiple wellness programs.

"Childhood and teen obesity is on the rise in our area and parents don't know where to turn," said Matt Carlen, vice president of health and wellness at Centegra Health System. "We designed a class to provide the support needed for both children and their parents."

Centegra Kids in Motion uses nutrition education, behavioral therapy and physical activity to help participants reach their goals. The class has activity-based kids programming, nutrition counseling, one-on-one coaching and personalized meal planning.

The program is open to children, age 7 to 13. A major component of the class is parental involvement and education. Parents and children older than 12 may use the Centegra Health Bridge Fitness Center facility for free from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. prior to the class. Childcare will be provided free of charge for children younger than the age of 12.

The next session runs from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Sept. 8 to Oct. 27, at Centegra Health Bridge Fitness Center-Huntley, 10450 Algonquin Road. The cost is $149 per child, and there are scholarships available.
