Jake Arrieta threw a no-hitter Sunday night at Dodger Stadium, and the Chicago Cubs beat Los Angeles 2-0. Arrieta struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth. Arrieta struck out 12 and allowed just two baserunners, one on a Cubs error and one on a walk. Full story.

Lindenhurst teen remembered for spirit, dedication

In an outpouring of community support on social media and elsewhere Sunday, friends described 15-year-old Haylie Winiewicz as a great teammate and a wonderful friend. Haylie and her father, Chris Winiewicz, 50, died Saturday after their car collided with a pickup truck at routes 45 and 132 near Lindenhurst, where they lived, authorities said. Full story.

American Indian veterans gather at Cantigny

Cantigny Park in Wheaton was an appropriate site for this weekend's gathering of American Indian veterans. The National Gathering of Native Veterans, organized by the Trickster gallery, drew 1,200, "even in the rain" on Saturday, said Joe Podlasek, CEO of the Schaumburg-based gallery. He estimated Sunday's crowd at 300 to 400. "All of you who are American Indian veterans who fought for America, not because you were getting the best deal out of America, but because it was your country, I think we owe you an extra debt of gratitude for your service and your heroism," said Paul Herbert, executive director of the First Division Museum at Cantigny Park in Wheaton. Hitzeman: Common sense prevails with 'rape kit' law

The General Assembly recently passed a bill that was signed by Gov. Bruce Rauner to prohibit health care providers from billing rape victims. The law takes effect Jan. 1. Attorney General Lisa Madigan said in a news release she initiated the legislation to ensure compliance with the federal Violence Against Women Act of 2013. Full column.

Namesake of iconic Mt. Prospect business dies

The namesake of one of Mount Prospect's most iconic businesses has died. Fred Meeske, a co-owner of Meeske's Market, which had anchored downtown Mount Prospect for 59 years, died Wednesday after a long battle with prostate cancer. He was 87. Full story.

White Sox rally to beat Mariners in 11

With Jose Quintana on the mound, Sunday shaped up as a good day for the Chicago White Sox. "There's an inner drive to him," manager Robin Ventura said. "He's a tough kid, and I enjoy sending him out there." It was actually a tough day for Quintana, who gave up a 2-run homer to Kyle Seager in the first inning and a 2-run shot to Austin Jackson in the second. That put the White Sox in an early hole, but they climbed out and beat the Seattle Mariners 6-5 in 11 innings at U.S. Cellular Field. Read Scot Gregor's take here.
