Investigation continues into Lindenhurst crash

Lindenhurst police say they're still trying to find out who was responsible for a two-vehicle accident that left a local man and his teenage daughter dead.

Autopsies didn't shed much light on the crash that killed Chris Winiewicz and his 15-year-old daughter, Haylie, of Lindenhurst. Both suffered multiple injuries, said Chief Lake County Deputy Coroner Orlando Portillo.

The results of toxicology tests are pending, Portillo said.

Police said the crash happened Saturday afternoon at the intersection of routes 45 and 132 in Lindenhurst.

Ashley Winiewicz, 16, was driving the family's Kia when it collided with a Nissan pickup truck, police said. Ashley survived the wreck, as did the occupants of the pickup truck, according to authorities.

The pickup truck's driver was identified Monday as Christopher Romano, 32, of Zion. The passenger was Jacob Stone, 25, of Bartlett.

Lindenhurst police said they were still investigating the crash Monday.

Meanwhile, Renee Zoladz, associate superintendent for instructional and personnel services at Grayslake High School District 127, said everyone there is pulling together to support students in the wake of Haylie's death. Haylie was a sophomore at the school, where she was on the cheerleading team with Ashley, a junior.

Grayslake North students and families will have a crisis team available to them throughout the week. Zoladz said a special area was set aside Monday for Grayslake North cheerleaders.

Several Grayslake North students wore purple to school Monday in honor of Haylie.

"It was very emotional," Zoladz said.

Haylie's death has touched teenagers well beyond Grayslake North. For example, Huntley High School cheerleading squad members in the far west suburbs tweeted a photo of themselves Monday wearing purple to remember Haylie.

A wake for Haylie and Chris Winiewicz will be 2 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Warren Cemetery and Funeral Home, 1495 N. Cemetery Road in Gurnee.

Mass will be said at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 15000 Wadsworth Road, Wadsworth.
