Silver Games promote friendly competition, active fun
Seniors may indulge in a little good-natured rivalry during the Schaumburg Park District's Silver Games, presented by Schaumburg Bank & Trust Company, a Wintrust Community Bank.
The games kick off at 10 a.m., Sept. 10 at the Community Recreation Center, 505 N. Springinsguth Road, with activities also taking place Sept. 11, 14 and 15 at locations throughout Schaumburg, including Friendship Village, 350 W. Schaumburg Road. Featuring 32 events, competitions include a mile walk, bocce ball, pinochle, word search, water volleyball, table tennis, golf and a fishing derby.
"The Silver Games are for all levels and abilities." said Lisa Perrone, senior citizen supervisor for the Schaumburg Park District. "Some participants are doing activities like jigsaw puzzles and Sudoku. They're not all physical sports."
A 9-hole golf tournament is planned from 8 to 11 a.m., Sept. 11 at Schaumburg Golf Club, 401 N. Roselle Road, with bowling and billiards taking place from 1 to 4 p.m. at Poplar Creek Bowl, 2354 W. Higgins Road, Hoffman Estates. New events this year include soccer kicks, quarterback toss and shot put.
A closing feast with dinner and entertainment is planned from 4-5 p.m., Sept. 16 at Friendship Village.
Cost to participate in the games is $10, with an additional $5 required to participate in the golf tournament. Closing feast admission is $5.
"The games are competitive, but competitiveness is not the goal," Perrone said. "The goal is making friends and having a good time. This gives seniors in Schaumburg an opportunity to do something for their mind, body and soul."
