Transitions Hospice to host volunteer training

Transitions Hospice, 12040 Raymond Court in Huntley, will host a volunteer training session at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 28.

In the Companion Volunteer Orientation, you will learn the approach to helping patients to find their remaining days to be meaningful. This is the main volunteer program. You will be asked to visit at least once a week for at least an hour.

In the Vigil Volunteer Program, you will learn how to support a patient in the last hours of their life. As a member of a Vigil Volunteer team, you will be called to fill a 2- to 4-hour shift when a patient is actively dying. Completing the Companion Volunteer Orientation is preferred.

Each program will run from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. They provide a continental breakfast and lunch. You will enjoy the events as well as enjoy meeting other volunteers. They also provide training materials and insights into how you can help a dying patient. All you need to do is be present and bring is your compassion.

After the orientation, if you commit to volunteer, they will match you with a mentor and a patient near your home, provide a hospice jacket and a name badge. Contact them at your earliest convenience to schedule your attendance in the sessions of your choice.
