Lake Co. sheriff's deputies save man from heroin overdose

Lake County Sheriff's deputies using the opioid antagonist Naloxone saved a man in Ingleside from a potentially fatal heroin overdose Saturday, officials said.

Deputies were called to a home in the 26500 block of West Edward Avenue of Ingleside at 7:50 p.m. Saturday on a report of an unresponsive 49-year-old man, sheriff's police said. After finding the man under a living room table, deputies quickly ascertained he had extreme labored breathing and was likely suffering from an opiate overdose, authorities said.

Deputies gave the man a dose of Naloxone, a drug which can reverse the effects of an opiate overdose, and he began breathing normally and started to regain consciousness, police said. He was transported to Centegra Northern Illinois Medical Center in McHenry for treatment. Through further investigation, deputies learned the man had injected heroin prior to going unconscious, sheriff's police said.

All Lake County Sheriff's deputies are equipped with Naloxone in an effort to combat opioid overdose.
