Two weak tornadoes confirmed in Naperville, Downers Grove
The National Weather Service has confirmed two tornadoes briefly touched in DuPage County earlier this week, including one that covered a path from far southeastern Naperville to Woodridge.
In about five minutes, the E-0 tornado - the weakest on a 0-5 scale - stayed on the ground for 3 miles, with winds topping 70 to 80 mph during volatile storms Tuesday night, forecasters said.
It touched down on the north side of Royce Road, just west of the entrance to the Will County Forest Preserve's Whalon Lake, according to the national weather service. Several trees were snapped, damaged, or uprooted in its path northeast. One of the damaged trees fell onto a power line near Royce Road.
By 8 p.m., the tornado was gone, lifting off the ground on the south side of 75th Street near Route 53.
A second, E-O tornado also developed Tuesday night in Downers Grove, forecasters said. That one was even shorter, covering a quarter of a mile.
The tornado touched down in a backyard near Saratoga and Franklin streets, forecasters said. The "most significant" damage, the weather service noted, involved a hardwood tree that fell onto and crushed a car parked on Saratoga.
