COD trustees vote to begin Breuder termination proceedings

A push to fire embattled College of DuPage President Robert Breuder started in earnest last night with COD trustees voting to initiate termination proceedings. But the process of trying to oust Breuder could take months. “This is not a conclusion,” Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton said before the vote. “It is not a finding. It starts a process. Legendary meteorologist Harry Volkman dies

Harry Volkman was accurate, trusted, charismatic — qualities that made audiences tune into his weather reports for more than 50 years. Volkman, 89, died yesterday at Oakton Pavillion nursing home in Des Plaines, his son, Eddie Volkman, told media blogger Robert Feder. His Chicago career spanned all the major networks, delivering forecasts that were entertaining — remember the “whoosh!” — and educational. “If you really love something,” Volkman told the Daily Herald three years later, “you don't get tired of it ever.” Full story.

St. Charles parents mourn son killed while battling Washington wildfire

At Baker Memorial United Methodist Church in St. Charles, the Rev. Mary Zajac shared with her congregation her preparations for her son's wedding day. Last night, she was mourning with them. Her son, Andrew, was one of three firefighters who died after their vehicle crashed and was engulfed by flames in a Washington wildfire. “The congregation is very upset,” said the Rev. Al Patten, the church's retired pastor. “Mary has had two bouts with cancer surgery and seems to come through that very well. It's been a mighty stressful year for her.” Full story.

Hahn: Any potential Sox changes won't come until off-season

The White Sox (56-63) were able to snap a three-game losing streak, beating Los Angeles 8-2. Breaking out of his normal routine, GM Rick Hahn spoke to reporters before the Sox and Angels wrapped up a four-game series. When asked if another lost season is going to lead to changes on the roster, coaching staff or even front office, Hahn hit the brakes. Full story.
