Scripture groups studying Luke, Psalms begin in September at St. Thomas the Apostle

Thursday sessions, meeting in the morning and evening beginning Sept. 10, will consider "The Gospel of Luke; All Are Welcome: the Gospel of Inclusivity and Mercy," while Friday morning sessions will study "Psalms, Life as Prayer," beginning Sept. 11.

The focus for Bible study at St. Thomas reflects this year's parish theme, "Called to Faith, Called to Witness, Called to Love." That theme, in turn, is based on the three Pillars of Diocesan Pastoral Concern: discipleship, evangelization and charity.

"No previous Bible knowledge is necessary," said Rosales, "and everyone is encouraged to make a full-time commitment, drop in whenever you can, or just come and see what goes on. Bring a friend or make new ones throughout the season," she added.

Casual in approach, "both series will be a mix of study, prayer and discussion," said Rosales, adding, "There's even been known to be lively discussion."

Registration for Scripture study is preferred to assure adequate seating is available, and a nominal fee covers the cost of materials. Those encountering financial difficulties also may contact Rosales to make alternative arrangements regarding materials fees.

Thursday Bible Study: "The Gospel of Luke; All Are Welcome: the Gospel of Inclusivity and Mercy"

Luke's Gospel was selected for study this season in honor of Pope Francis' proclamation of a Jubilee Year of Mercy.

Participants may choose to meet from 9:15 a.m. - 11:15 a.m. or from 7:30 - 9:00 p.m. on Thursdays, Sept. 10 through May 26, 2016. They also are welcome to alternate between the morning and evening sessions.

"Come to participate in an interactive study of and reflection on Luke's Gospel," invited Rosales, noting that "it has been variously characterized as the Gospel of compassion, mercy, prayer, the Holy spirit, and good news for all people, especially the poor and outcast.

"We will learn from, and pray with, the Good Samaritan, the prodigal son, and many women and men who knew the loving mercy of Jesus," she continued. "Through their experiences we today can know and experience this mercy, too."

An engaging and knowledgeable speaker who enlivens her subject matter with clarity, vivacity and a sense of humor, Rosales will facilitate these sessions. Long active in church ministry, Rosales' areas of specialty include Scripture study, liturgy, and religious history. She has studied at Loyola University Chicago, Dominican University in River Forest, and the Universite de Fribourg in Switzerland.

Registration for "The Gospel of Luke" by Tuesday, Sept. 1, is encouraged. To register, contact Rosales at (630) 355-8980, ext. 138, or crosales@stapostle.org; or Marge Coronado, religious education assistant, at (630) 355-8980, ext. 118, or mcoronado@stapostle.org.

Friday Bible Study: "Psalms, Life as Prayer"

Often called the Bible's "Book of Prayers," the Book of Psalms is our way of conversing with God. Participants will look at selected psalms in traditional language and modern paraphrase in song, art and story as these interpretations reflect the ups and downs of their own lives.

Discussions will be led by Audrey Easton, a graduate of the Bible Institute of the Diocese of Joliet, and a team of facilitators. Study sessions will meet from 9:15 - 11:15 a.m. on Fridays, Sept. 11 through May 20, 2016.

Registration is encouraged by Tuesday, Sept. 1, for "Psalms, Life as Prayer" by contacting Marge Coronado at (630) 355-8980, ext. 118, or mcoronado@stapostle.org.

Additional information about either Scripture study program is available from Rosales at (630) 355-8980, ext. 138, or crosales@stapostle.org.
