When school day ends, learning and nurturing continue at Taylor Y's afterschool program

To help nurture and inspire kids to discover their potential, the Taylor Family YMCA is offering an after school program to school-aged children from the Burlington, Gilberts, and Lily Lake areas.

Through a holistic approach to youth development, the Y's after school program offers activities in a caring and safe environment where youth can achieve, feel a sense of belonging, build friendships and explore new interests.

One in four U.S. children is left unsupervised at the end of school day, according to the Afterschool Alliance, a nonprofit public awareness advocacy organization.

With the start of the new school year, the Taylor Family YMCA encourages parents/caregivers to make sure that children are involved in safe, educational experiences after school hours.

"When the school day ends, continued learning can have a positive influence on how well youth perform in school, boosting school attendance, academic performance and reducing gaps in academic achievement particularly among children from disadvantaged households," said Chris MacMillan, school age child care coordinator at Taylor Family YMCA. "With the support of nurturing adults, youth in after school programs cultivate the values, skills, and relationships that lead to positive behaviors, better health, and education achievement."

The Y is a leading nonprofit committed to nurturing the potential of every child and teen, supporting their social-emotional, cognitive and physical development from birth to career. In the Taylor Family YMCA's Afterschool Achievement Academy programs have a curriculum that includes homework assistance, health, science, math, reading, and most important - fun!

Children are able to engage in active games and free play both in the gym and outside on the playgrounds. All children will be encouraged to be active for 60 minutes per day. The children can make positive lifestyle choices, be more active, and can bring a contagious love of health and wellness back to their families.

Before- and after-school child care is offered at Lily Lake Elementary School, 5N720 Route 47 in Maple Park, and Howard B. Thomas Elementary School, 44W575 Plato Road in Burlington. Gilberts Elementary School, 729 Paperbark Lane in Gilberts, offers only after-school care.

Financial assistance is available to those in need, to ensure every child and teen has the opportunity to learn and grow at the Y.
