Walgreens cuts 370 jobs

Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc. said Tuesday it has cut about 370 jobs, including 270 at its Deerfield headquarters and other suburban offices.

The workforce was told on Monday afternoon, while affected employees in offices in Deerfield, Northbrook, Lincolnshire, Bannockburn and Mount Prospect will be told through the rest of this month. Workers at stores were not affected, said company spokesman Phil Caruso.

"These corporate support office changes will allow us to reduce management layers, phase out certain functions and consolidate similar job functions within the company," Caruso said.

Walgreens has been restructuring since its merger with Boots Alliance was completed last year.

Recent changes have included the closure of 200 underperforming Walgreens, including 10 in Chicago and the suburbs, while opening new stores elsewhere.

"As part of Walgreens' ongoing restructuring and cost reduction plan announced a year ago, we are realigning our business and reorganizing our corporate structure as we adapt to the fast-changing health care and retail market," Caruso said.

Affected employees will be offered severance packages and will be given 60 days' notice.

"We don't have any plans for similar reductions," Caruso said. "Like any well-run business, we will continuously evaluate our business and how we adapt to the changing market place. It is also worth mentioning that no offices will close as a result of these changes."

The company has about 23,000 employees statewide, including about 4,000 support office employees in the Chicago area.
