Bail set for suspect in Monday Naperville heist

Bail was set at $300,000 for one of two men accused in the Monday morning robbery of a professional gambler in Naperville.

Robert Chencinski, 45, of the 1900 block of Leavitt in Chicago, is charged with robbery and is being held in DuPage County jail. Prosecutors on Tuesday said additional charges are likely.

Prosecutors said Chencinski and an unidentified man used a stolen car to trigger a minor traffic accident with the victim around 8 a.m. near the intersection of Bailey and Shepherd in an attempt to lure the victim from his car. The men may have targeted the victim and followed him for some distance, possibly from a nearby casino, authorities said.

Prosecutors said the men stole about $50,000 cash from the Naperville victim and Chencinski had just more than $10,000 in his pockets at the time of his arrest.

After beating and robbing the victim, the men fled in a small, black stolen car before ditching it near the intersection of River and Thornapple roads when police attempted to stop them, police said.

Both suspects tried to run away, but Chencinski was quickly caught hiding in a nearby backyard, police said. The second man remains at large.

Police said the second suspect is a thin white man, about 6 feet tall, who was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and dark pants at the time that he fled.

Police closed several side streets for nearly four hours and conducted house-by-house searches in the area bounded by West Street on the east, Oswego Road on the south and River Road on the west.

Chencinski, a construction worker, told the judge he would not be able to post bail because "they (police) took all of (my) money."

His next court date is scheduled for Aug. 31.
