Carpentersville house fire causes $100,000 in damage

A Carpentersville home is uninhabitable after a fire caused $100,000 in damage Sunday, officials said. The fire appeared to have started at around 7:45 a.m. in the back of a two-story house on the 800 block of Monroe Avenue, said Battalion Chief Kieran Stout. Full story.

Palatine to reconsider church tonight

After six councilmen voted against it in June, a plan to build a church in the site of a former golf instruction facility at 399 N. Quentin Road will be reconsidered by the Palatine village council at tonight's meeting. The council rejected the proposal for several reasons, including parking and traffic concerns and that the church would not generate taxes. Full story.

Parade showcases importance of pets

Kari Shemansky can still remember marching at 6 years old with her grandparents' dog in the inaugural North Aurora Pet Parade. On Sunday, Shemansky returned for the 33rd annual Pet Parade to share the experience with her daughter, MacKenzie Villarreal, 11. The North Aurora residents showed off their blue pit bull, Princess, who was dressed in a pink tutu. "It's the value of pets in our lives - that's what we're trying to showcase," said Tom Brooks, parade organizer. Full story.

Augustfest comes to a close in Des Plaines

The community church festival Augustfest wrapped up its four-day run Sunday at St. Zachary Parish in Des Plaines. "Augustfest has been around for 32 years. This is the longest-running church fest in the area. We are very proud of it here at St. Zachary," said Linda Forman, co-chair for Augustfest. Full story.

Arrieta, Chicago Cubs blank Giants for sweep

Royals sweep White Sox

Alex Rios beat the tag at the plate on a grounder in the eighth inning and the Kansas City Royals edged the Chicago White Sox 5-4 Sunday for a three-game sweep. Kansas City improved to 10-3 against the White Sox this season. Full story.
