Johnsburg man dies after being hit by 2 trucks

A Johnsburg man died Tuesday after being hit by two trucks in McHenry, officials said.

At around 8:50 a.m., Robert P. Choate Jr., 41, was seen walking onto the eastbound lanes of the 900 block of Route 120 near Kent Road when he was struck by a box truck, said Deputy Aimee Knop of the McHenry County sheriff's office.

According to a news release from the McHenry County coroner's office, Choate got up and continued walking and was then hit by a semitrailer.

When the McHenry Township Fire Protection District arrived minutes later, Choate was critically injured and lying unresponsive on the roadway, Battalion Chief Mike Majercik said.

Choate was taken to Centegra Northern Illinois Medical Center in McHenry, where he was pronounced dead at 9:24 a.m. An autopsy and toxicology tests will be performed Wednesday morning, the coroner's office said.

Neither alcohol nor drugs are suspected to have played a role in the accident, Knop said.

There were no other injuries reported, she said.

Eastbound Route 120 was closed for several hours after the accident, officials said. Lakemoor and McHenry police departments also assisted at the scene.

The McHenry County Sheriff's Accident Investigation Unit is investigating the accident.
