Stolen dog found abandoned in hospital parking lot

Mr. Reese, the 8-year-old Jack Russell terrier mix stolen from a Northbrook-area animal shelter, has been found and is expected to meet his new adoptive family soon, officials said Tuesday.

The dog was discovered Tuesday morning in the parking lot of Glenbrook Hospital in Glenview by an employee, who turned the dog over to the hospital's public safety staff. They then gave the dog to Glenview police, who bring strays to a kennel facility in Glenview.

Employees at the kennel checked the dog's microchip, confirming it was Mr. Reese, who had been taken from Heartland Animal Shelter, 2975 N. Milwaukee Ave., sometime between 7 p.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. Sunday.

When the burglary occurred, the animal shelter was doing reference checks on the family that planned to adopt Mr. Reese - something that is normal practice at Heartland, said manager Angelique Walker.

Now that the dog is back at the shelter, he'll soon be with his new family, Walker said.

"They're ecstatic," she said. "We're working with them to set up a time to pick him up."

Prospect Heights police, which have jurisdiction of the unincorporated area where the shelter is located, said the investigation into the burglary is ongoing.

"We haven't had any feedback on who may have taken him or why," Walker said. "We're just hoping some clues come up."
