Man pleads guilty to robbing St. Charles shop for bongs

A St. Charles man pleaded guilty Wednesday to robbing a tobacco store of two $2,000 marijuana water pipes in January.

Jacob M. Fahey, 21, pleaded guilty to armed robbery and aggravated battery of a peace officer.

He was sentenced to 10 years in prison for the armed robbery, and three for struggling against and pushing the officer arresting him. The sentences will be served concurrently.

Fahey is eligible for day-for-day sentencing credit, meaning he could end up serving only five years. He also received credit for the 195 days he has been in the Kane County jail since his arrest in February.

Fahey and Rayshawn M. Vonperbandt, 21, also of St. Charles, were accused of robbing Tobacco and Gifts, 1556 E. Main St., on Jan. 4.

In court, Fahey admitted to pointing a BB gun at a shop employee during the robbery. Police say Vonperbandt had a knife.

They were accused of stealing a wallet, a key, a multicolored glass pipe on a tripod base, and another with a shark sitting atop coral.

The employee recognized the two men from previous visits to the store, and described what they were wearing to police.

Two people then told police they received a Facebook message from a person, later identified as Vonperbandt, trying to sell the shark bong for $1,600. He also offered to trade for it, according to an affidavit police submitted to obtain a search warrant for Fahey's and Vonperbandt's cellphones.

Detectives found a black pellet gun and clothing that matched the description given by the store employee at Fahey's home.

Vonperbandt remains in Kane County jail awaiting trial.
