Amma, a humanitarian and spiritual leader from India who blesses people with hugs, embraces a couple while saying a prayer into the woman's ear during her recent visit to the MA Center in Elburn. Each hug would last about 10 seconds, and sometimes Amma would toss a handful of flower petals around them. This woman was shedding tears as she rose to her feet, which was the case with many who received a blessing. Each person blessed is handed an apple and Hershey's Kiss by Amma as they depart, and a select few are given a rosewood prayer beads bracelet. This quiet moment is in the midst of a flurry of activity by several dozen people around her, including handlers guiding people to and from her embrace, those waiting in line and some meditating after their blessing. Hundreds of people waited hours for their blessing that day, which is a far cry from the thousands who wait when she makes appearances in India, as I was told by a media relations contact. Amma, whose full name is Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi, holds free public programs around the world to offer guidance, share words of wisdom and inspire people "to get involved in the process of rebuilding a concerned and caring society," according to her website, embracingtheworld.com.
