Volo pair arrested after gunshot fired into home

Lake County Sheriff's police arrested a pair of Volo residents late Saturday while investigating reports someone fired a gunshot into a home.

Sheriff's deputies responded to the 200 block of Niagara Drive in Volo at about 11 p.m. Saturday after a 911 caller reported seeing a person with a handgun then the sound of a gunshot coming from a neighbor's garage.

When deputies arrived they found evidence of a discharged gun round which struck a home in the neighboring 600 block of Richard Brown Boulevard and became lodged in a door, authorities said. The discharged round's path of travel was consistent with having been fired from where the witness observed, sheriff's police said.

While investigating, deputies located Joshua A. Polk, 24, and Caroline J. Tatum, 18, both of the 200 block of Niagara Drive, and a loaded .40 caliber Smith & Wesson handgun inside their residence, police said. Prepackaged marijuana also was found in the home, authorities said.

Polk was charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, a Class 3 felony, and reckless discharge of a firearm, a Class 4 felony. He is being held in the Lake County jail on $150,000 bail, with a court appearance scheduled for Wednesday.

Tatum was charged with unlawful possession of cannabis, a misdemeanor. She was released on a $25,000 recognizance bond, and her next court date is Aug. 20.
