Waverunner driver safe after going over Algonquin dam

A man driving a waverunner wasn't hurt Saturday afternoon when the watercraft went over a dam on the Fox River in Algonquin, authorities said.

Witnesses reported seeing a waverunner go over a low-head dam under the Algonquin Road bridge about 4 p.m. near Port Edward seafood restaurant, according to the Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District.

No one initially knew what happened to the driver, but he was found safe and uninjured a couple of blocks southwest of the dam.

First responders found the man, who is in his 60s, on the watercraft on the river behind an address on the 300 block of La Fox River Drive in Algonquin.

Authorities did not release the identity of the driver or explain why the craft went over the dam.
