Soak up the last days of summer at Schaumburg Park District pools

Outdoor pools will close in a few weeks, but there's still plenty of splashing to be done with the Schaumburg Park District.

Outdoor pool passes are 50 percent off for the remainder of the season and the weather is ideal for diving into fun at Bock, Meineke and Atcher Island.

"The pools were busy this summer and the recent hot and humid days have really drawn people to the pool facilities that are provided by the Park District," said Heather Hagstrom, aquatics supervisor.

Atcher Island, 730 S. Springinsguth Road, and Meineke Pool, 220 E. Weathersfield Way, will close Aug. 23. The tropical-themed Atcher Island features water and bowl slides, a wading pool, sprayground and concessions stand. Meineke Pool features water and drop slides, a 50-meter Olympic pool, separate diving well, water playground and swim lessons.

The last outdoor pool to close for the summer will be Bock Pool, 1223 W. Sharon Lane, on Sept. 7. Bock is home to a wading pool, diving area, children's slide and swim lessons. The pool's newest feature is the AquaClimb, a 9-foot high climbing wall.

Although outdoor pools will close, aquatics enthusiasts may make a splash year round at The Water Works, 505 N. Springinsguth Road. The indoor water park features three water slides, a rapid water channel, playground, diving pool, beach like entry pool and a whirlpool. Swim lessons also are available at The Water Works.

"Swimming isn't just for summertime at the Schaumburg Park District," Hagstrom said. "Swim lessons save lives and the nine months before summer returns is the perfect time to register your child in swim lessons or hone their swimming skills and confidence around the water. Lessons fill up fast so don't wait!"

The Water Works will be closed Aug. 10-30 for yearly maintenance. All outdoor pool pass holders may swim at The Water Works from Aug. 31-Sept. 7 for no additional charge.

Volkening Lake, 900 W. Schaumburg Road, closes for the season Sept. 7. The lake features a boating dock with canoes, kayaks and paddle boats for rent.

"Volkening Lake had a record-breaking year with people renting paddle boats and kayaks," Hagstrom said. "The annual Father's Day Fishing Derby had more than 70 participants and the 14.5 inch carp won the longest fish contest!"
