Rain shortens Saints' regional title game

St. Charles East and Waubonsie Valley will continue their baseball regional championship game at 11 a.m. Friday after rains shortened Thursday's contest of the Phil Lawler Summer Classic.

The Saints (26-7) lead the game 3-0 with 1 out in the top of the fourth. Saints starter Steve Podany had just retired Connor Yukna on a groundball to shortstop John Dellostritto when umpires decided the conditions were too wet to continue.

The teams waited for about 45 minutes before the game was postponed.

The winner advances to Monday's state tournament at noon at North Central College against Libertyville.

St. Charles East scored 1 run in each of the first 3 innings as the Warriors used 3 different pitchers.

Dellostritto led off the bottom of the first with a walk, stole second, moved to third on a sacrifice fly from Jimmy Dale and scored on Anthony Adduci's single to right field.

The Saints loaded the bases with no outs in the second on a walk to Corbin Marucco, Niko Klebosits was hit by a pitch and Podany singled. Dellostritto made it 2-0 with a single to left, but the Warriors escaped further damage when Dale's line drive to third turned into a double play.

Austin Gift opened the bottom of the third with a single and scored on Marucco's 2-out single to left. That made it 3-0 and was all the scoring before what had been a steady rain turned into a downpour.

Brandon Peterson's 2-out single in the first was the only hit for the Warriors.
