Hanover Township Emergency Services aids Coal City

The Hanover Township Emergency Services Unit was requested to provide assistance in Coal City on June 24 following the impact of severe weather that passed through the town and surrounding area.

The unit was first requested to respond mutual aid by the Grundy County Emergency Management Agency early on Wednesday morning and was on scene by 7:30 a.m. to provide assistance in conducting damage assessments. The unit's all-terrain vehicle was especially useful in accessing hard to reach locations due to extensive property damage and debris.

Later in the day, the unit was requested to respond mutual aid by the Coal City Police Department to provide checkpoint security, relieving local officers, for affected areas in and around the town.

"The Hanover Township Emergency Services Unit is always happy to assist other communities when requested in aiding those in distress," said William T. Burke. "Severe weather can occur anytime and in any place, and we understand the benefit of helping our neighbors and have no doubt of their aide when, and if, they need it."

A total of nine trained unit volunteers responded in three equipped vehicles to provide more than 99.5 hours of assistance to the communities affected by the severe weather.

The unit is trained to respond to a range of emergency and nonemergency events to either assist first responders or operate independently in times of natural or man-made disasters. This group of professional volunteers exists to provide a properly equipped, trained and ready unit to assist Hanover Township residents and the public safety agencies that serve them.
