Elk Grove Village is one of only three towns in Illinois to be recognized by a national nonprofit group as a "Playful City" for its recreational opportunities.

It's the first time Elk Grove has made the Playful City USA list, determined by KaBOOM!, an organization that has helped build, open or improve nearly 16,300 playgrounds since 1996.

"Playability is crucial to the success of our future communities, and we are proud of the work these cities and leaders are doing to provide a better quality of life for all residents, and especially families," said KaBOOM! President James Siegal.

According to the organization, "playability is the extent to which a city makes it easy for all kids to get balanced and active play."

Also recognized on the list of 241 communities was Chicago and Waterloo, Illinois.
